Erbaut in den Jahren 1892-97 von Ernst Giese, Paul Weidner und Arwed Rosbach, wurde der Dresdner Hauptbahnhof als einer der letzten großen Deutschen Bahnhöfe von der "Deutschen Bahn AG" saniert. Unter Federführung des bedeutenden Architekten Sir Norman Forster bekam er anstatt eines Glasdaches ein neues Membrandach, einem Material aus äußerst reißfesten Gewebe (Teflon-Dach aus Glasfaser). Es läßt je nach Sonnenintensität verschiedene Farbtöne des Tageslichtes durchscheinen oder reflektiert es auf der Außenseite. Direkt über den eisernen Hallenbögen spaltet sich das zeltartige Dach zu schmalen Schlitzen, die den direkten Blick zum Himmel freigeben. Zum ersten Mal konnte ein historisches Bauwerk mit diesem neuen Material in Verbindung gebracht werden. Das neue Dach ist schmutzresistent, lässt wieder Licht durch das Gebäude fließen und bringt das historische Tragwerk zur Wirkung.
Der Dresdner Hauptbahnhof besitzt in der dreischiffigen Stahlbogenhalle 18 Bahnsteige: im Mittelschiff (Spannweite 50 m) ebenerdig als Kopfbahnhof, in den Seitenschiffen (Spannweiten 30 m) als Hochbahnsteige für den Durchgangsverkehr.
